| SOC 3143/HIST 3143 Dr. Jamie Brandon The histories and cultural traditions of North America’s First Nations—the “American Indians”—cover thousands of years and many millions of people. In this class we will explore the archeology, ethnology, and history of Native Americans in North America from the time of their arrival on this continent to the present century. Several indigenous groups from different "culture areas" are highlighted to emphasize particular forms of economy, social organization, and spirituality. The course focuses on the more traditional American Indian cultures that existed before the establishment of Western domination, as well as on the more recent native culture history and modern-day economic, sociopolitical and cultural continuity, change, and revitalization.
